Multi-Tasking Getting You Down?

Do you feel obligated to multi-task your day away in order to “get it all done”?

I paused for five minutes to read an article, which had been posted by someone I follow on either Twitter or Tumblr….no I’m pretty sure it was Facebook… no, wait, it was Twitter…

…where was I?

The piece initially caught my eye because it was about time management skills.  As I read the very first paragraph, I was compelled to stop the three other activities I was attempting to juggle at that moment, so I could focus my attention on what I was reading.

It was really just a simple, single term that caught my attention and held it:  Mono-tasking.


Whoa – mono – as in the opposite to multi.  Hmmmm….

You do it, right?  Multi-task?  I do…at least, I think I do.

To be honest, I am not too sure that what I do can be classified as multi-tasking…in the true sense of the word.

Everyday, I am constantly aware of the fact I am:

Doing the dishes, folding laundry, and prepping veggies for that night’s dinner.  At the same time.


Checking email in one account, while composing email in another account and selecting images for posts on my blog.

Just yesterday, as I was dashing out the door – running behind schedule for my meetings and errands, I paused and snapped a pic of my reflection.  I needed an image for one of my sets on Flickr, this seemed like a good time to tackle it.

On Sunday mornings, I read Huffington Post online while composing my grocery shopping list for the week.

Texting and running on the treadmill at the same time?  Sadly, I have done this.

Okay, so my question (mostly to myself) is:  Am I multi-tasking or just suffering from adult ADD?  Also, am I multi-tasking due to standards I set for myself that are, perhaps, a tad unrealistic?

It’s not that I am unproductive.  My days are busy, and I do accomplish a number of projects on a weekly basis.  Working independently the way that I do, if I don’t finish things, I can’t make money.

It is not that I am extremely frazzled all the time and feel bogged down.  I juggle, because it is what it is: I am a busy person with a multitude of responsibilities on a daily basis.

Yet, at the same time, I wonder if the quality of my production might be increased if I took up this “mono-tasking”.

Would organising my day around mono-tasking allow me to feel more fulfilled?  Would I have more personal gratification from starting one task and finishing one task before moving on to the next?


Am I able to let go of the fear that I don’t have enough hours in the day?

I am going to explore this mono-tasking thing a little more closely.  Doing one thing at a time?  I will certainly give it try, if I can concentrate on it long enough.

This morning, I went to the gym for a run.  I left my cell phone and my tablet at home.  No emails or texting while trying to complete 5 kms in 30 minutes.

It was nice having 30 minutes to do one thing.  ONE thing.
